I've been filling out at least one application a day for the past couple of weeks (but overall been on it for a month) and still no luck. My educational background is nearly perfect, straight As and six honors, but I have no work experience whatsoever. I'm 16...and starting to get frustrated. Not a single call and no interviews so far. I'm comfortable with just about any part time job~I've tried out restaurants, markets, and still no luck. I've also been looking for jobs online, teen jobs are quite scarce. My friends seem to get jobs quite easily and that makes me a bit more dumbfounded. Is it that hard for a non experienced teen to find a job these days? Any secrets or advice you might want to share? I'd really appreciate it.
Desperately looking for a job!?
You may want to follow-up on those applications. You can call and ask to speak with the hiring manager (you may want to call beforehand, and get his/her name in case they answer). Tell them you would like to follow-up on an application you put in on _____, and you wanted to know if you could speak with them personally to further discuss your qualifications.
Also, did you send a cover letter with those app's? You should look at doing so. Be sure to mention your accomplishments (academically and personally). I imagine you know what the "thing" is about dressing up, right? Slacks and a dress shirt go well when asking AND turning in your application. Trust me, they were watching you as soon as you set your first foot in that door seeing what type of person you are. Oh, and when you do get the interview, send them a thank you letter thanking them for their time and opportunity for the interview...VERY IMPORTANT! And, have someone like a teacher or counselor look over your resume and cover letter.
Reply:If you aren't getting interviews then it could be your application. Are you spelling everything right? Wording everything right? The next application have someone read over it.
Reply:Try teenmoneymakingideas.com they have articles on internet jobs and how to get a job near you. I know that getting a job can be tough but hang in there and sooner or later you'll get hired.
Reply:Try monster.com. they can help you.
Reply:It may have a lot to do with the way you look or act when you go in to these businesses. Be clean and neat and don't act too arrogant, like you are as smart as you are. That turns people off a lot.
What about a retail store? Like Walmart or Target? Does any adult know someone who might hire you on for experience of any kind?
You have to just keep trying, it'll happen. Don't act desperate, that turns people off too.
Reply:Don't wait for a call. After a predetermined time period (whatever you feel comfortable with) contact them. Ask them if they have had an opportunity to look over your application and if they have any questions. If they are really hiring (and your appearance is professional) they will often times set up an official interview. Many places don't actually look at the apps unless you check back in. I used to wait 3 or 4 days and when I would go back in I could tell that they were looking at my application for the first time.
